I've never been a big fan of NBC's singing competition 'The Voice'. Something about it didn't fully sit well with me. It didn't seem as legit as comparable singing competitions. Was it a little too much crazy?
For me... perhaps. But, this season brought a new Latina Goddess Coach to my TV screen in the form of Shakira!
Clearly it was time to start watching. Needless to say, but Shakira doesn't disappoint. Shakira never disappoints, just take a look at the beautiful specimen of man she calls her lover and baby daddy...
I'm still not totally sold on the show. Then, in walks Sasha Allen, respectively competing on Shakira's team.
All you need to see is Sasha's performance of 'Oh Darling' from last night's episode and you'll know what I mean. Take a look below:
That should've done the trick. It did for me last night. I kept staring at the TV wondering why it was that Miss Allen looked so ridiculously familiar. Where had I seen her before? Where did the producers cast this girl from?
Then... it came to me - 'CAMP'!
She's the songbird from 'Camp'!
Camp' is a cult film followed by gays, theater queens, and drama/musical fans alike. The film takes place at a fictional theater based arts camp in upstate New York, where a group of teenage kids attend and deal with all sorts of coming-of-age themed experiences, all while strongly held together by music. The fun and honesty with this film was in the way it handled gay themes among young people. The film brought some phenomenal performances of young up-and-comers to an indie film screen. Of those kids, one Miss Sasha Allen - now on NBC's 'The Voice'.
Take a look at the preview below:
That's Sasha singing in the beginning, and you get to see a lot of different gay-friendly themes portrayed, along with the biting dialogue that only we gays can deliver best.
For more of Sasha's performance, take a look below:
'Camp', one of my all-time favorites, did not launch careers for everyone involved, but some had rising effects.
Take a look at the clip below to see a star of today as a young girl...
That's Academy Award Nominee Anna Kendrick in the role of 'Fritzy', an anxious and quirky Single White Female type character who poisons her costar in the performance above.
Then, there's Daniel Letterle, who went on to star in 'The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green'...
A movie that bordered on softcore gay porn...
There's Robin De Jesus, who played Michael in the movie 'Camp'.
I was in Times Square a few years ago with my girlfriend Jamie and I spotted Robin. Excitedly, we approached and I introduced myself. Robin had gone on to...
Working at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Times Square, following in Forrest's footsteps...
And, now, as of last night I've learned that Sasha Allen of 'Camp' fame has moved on to the current season of NBC's 'The Voice'. As far as performing goes, along with my love of 'Camp', Sasha Allen's one to watch... I hope for Jennifer Hudson-esque success for her.
I wonder, did the casting directors at NBC cast Sash from her stay at 'Gay-Camp'?
Take a look at Sasha singing, one more time below:
Girl can sing. Period.
